The human brain is reacting to things using its senses and from there make a picture of what is true and what is not. For an example illusionists can trick the mind by letting the human eye believe something it sees, or not sees. The same way with action. The brain needs a tactile feedback from a touch or pressing a button or command. That is why touch screens have not been the best, even with modern smartphones and tablets.
The inventor behind the original keyboard never intended to patent a keyboard, but rather the technology behind it. This is why the patents of the technology include not only keyboards but all kind of computer terminals and digital devices from ATMs, gaming devices to airplaine cockpits and so on.
